Abstract

Refugees and asylum-seekers face various obstacles in their quest for refuge in destination countries of their choice. These include dangerous border crossings and the possibility of being exploited by criminals. For refugees in particular, state-initiated barriers also take the form of restrictive immigration control measures once the refugees and asylumseekers have landed in the foreign countries of their choice. Because of such measures, refugee and asylum petitions are not processed expeditiously as most industrialised countries tighten their borders to pass off asylum-seekers to their neighbours. Restrictive immigration control measures are now the developed world‘s primary and, some might argue, sole response to the growing number of refugees and asylum-seekers. Addressing the existing unequal distribution of responsibility for and protection of refugees should be a fundamental component of immigration control measures. Greater commitment to multilateralism should be based mostly on sharing responsibility for refugees, through relocation, humanitarian visas, or regional and international distribution systems, and the sharing of resources such as emergency assistance, specialised personnel, expertise and funding.

Through his ventures, he leverages his academic qualifications to shape the future and drive innovation at the intersection of business, technology, law, and social impact.

    Stanley Murairwa (PhD) is the Interim Dean of the College of Business, Peace, Leadership and Governance (CBPLG) at Africa University (AU) in Zimbabwe. He obtained a Ph.D. degree in Decision Science from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Malaysia, M.Sc. degree in Operations Research (Distinction) from National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Zimbabwe, B.Sc. Special Honours degree in Statistics (Upper Second Division) from University of Zimbabwe (UZ), Diploma in Statistics (Pass) from University of Zimbabwe (UZ), Diploma in Management Information System from The Institute for the Management of Information Systems (IMIS), United Kingdom and a two year In-House Statistical Training Programme (ISTP) Part-A and Part-B certificates from Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT). His areas of research interest include Heuristics, Operations Research, Statistics, Operations Management, Combinatorial Optimization, Integer Programming, Optimization and Linear Programming.     Nobesuthu Trish Ndlovu is a human rights advocate who is very passionate about the empowerment of marginalized groups in society, particularly women, children living with autism and youth. She holds a Master in Human Rights, Peace and Development from Africa University, a Bachelor of Science Honors Degree in Politics and Public Administration from Great Zimbabwe University and several Diplomas in Project Management and French Language Studies inter-alia. She is an avid advocate of youth development, children and women`s rights.

    Nobesuthu`s career is premised on her favorite Nelson Mandela quote, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived; it is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead”. Her civic leadership journey began as a Junior Councilor in 2016 under the auspices of the Bulawayo Junior City Council and she has gone on to do even more remarkable work thereafter. She is currently working towards registering her non-profit organization, The Trish Foundation, aimed at dealing with various issues affecting women and the girl child such as mental health, reproductive health and gender-based violence amongst others. Nobesuthu seats on the Board of Gwanda Autism Association and is also a member of the Women Leaders Sounding Board under the auspices of Women`s Institute for Leadership Development (WILD). She is a member of the Common Futures Conversations, Chatham House and also a member of Ignite Youth Zimbabwe. She also volunteers as an Operations Associate for Women in Mining Africa, an organization aimed at championing social justice and gender equity within the mining sector. She recently started volunteering at Youth Transforming Narratives, a global movement for young people by young people, aimed at changing narratives and bridging the gap between the global south and the global north. In May 2023, she was selected as a Leader of Tomorrow at the 52nd St Gallen Symposium in Switzerland for her essay titled “The Patriarchy Legacy: An Obstacle to the Attainment of Gender Equality” where she interrogated the problematic cultural aspect of patriarchy in African societies and in Zimbabwe paying particular attention to how it is thwarting global efforts being made towards gender equality. In 2024, she was selected to represent Zimbabwe under the Civic Leadership Track at the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Regional Leadership Centre Southern Africa and has now joined the YALI Alumni Zimbabwe Chapter.
